Freedom From Lenses with Myopia Control

A case report assisted and written by Brynn Babey, Southern California College of Optometry class of 2025.

A 13 year old male patient presented to CCLIM for a myopia evaluation. His parents first heard of myopia control at a school seminar, and wanted to learn more about it for their son.

He is a swimmer and wanted to be free of his glasses / prescription goggles. The patient’s spectacle prescription was Right Eye -3.50 -0.25 x005 and Left Eye -4.00 sph. The patient’s mom reported that his prescription was increasing in nearsightedness by approximately 1.00D every year. The patient had never heard of ortho-K lenses and has never worn contacts.

After educating the patient on the importance of myopia control to help slow down progression and protect ocular health, Dr. Holland fit the patient in ortho-K lenses. Adults or children wear ortho-K lenses while they sleep at night, providing freedom from vision correction during the day.

For this patient, ortho-K has the dual benefit of preventing myopia progression and minimizing the risk of eye infections from wearing contact lenses in the pool. After perfecting the fit and optimizing the ortho-K treatment, the patient can now go to school and swim, seeing 20/20 without glasses or contact lenses during the day!

We will now monitor the efficacy of his lenses through consistent axial length measurements, topography, and vision assessments.
