Life Changing Vision

Case report assisted and written by Natalie Nell from the Southern California College of Optometry. Presumed graduation date of May 2026.

A 26 year old male presents to our clinic for a medical consultation as a Keratoconus suspect.

The patient reports experiencing itchy eyes and gradual vision loss since he was 8 years old. The patient is using immunomodulators for treatment of MS.

Entrance distance acuities were Count Fingers OD, OS, with minimal visual improvement with refraction. Pentacam revealed advanced Keratoconus in both eyes with Kmax of 78.6 OD and 81.8 OS.

The patient was fit with custom scleral lenses in both eyes, achieving a BCVA of 20/25 OD and OS. This visual improvement was very shocking and emotional for the patient.

He was optimistic that these lenses would allow him to drive, pursue a nursing degree, and drastically improve his quality of life after just 3 visits with Dr Helene Pippin, OD, FAAO, ABO.
